Setting up your sewing space and few pointers on ergonomic sewing.

Whether you have a whole room or just a table for sewing, there are few things to keep in mind before you set up your sewing space.

The chair
- should be without wheels. So it wouldn't move while you sew and you can maintain the correct posture.
- should be with adjustable seat height and with backrest, that has an adjustable height and angle. Backrest should support your lower back while you are sitting on the chair.

The table
- should be with a table top big enough to have space for your sewing machine and for the item you plan to sew.
- should be high enough for you to sit at it with your legs bent under 90degree angle.

If possible, get  an extended worktop suitable for your sewing machine or if there's enough space and an extra table you are willing to sacrifice, why not lower your sewing machine into your table top?

The lighting
Sewing machines for home use come with a built in light, which sadly isn't always bright nor big enough to light the area around the needle.
I strongly advise using an extra task light at your sewing machine. I myself use a LED task light that is attached with a clamp to my sewing machine handle. LED generates very little heat, if any at all, is energy efficient and lasts longer than a conventional light bulb. Since it generates virtually no heat, you don't really have to worry about burning a nasty hole into your sewing project. I also suggest using LED bulb with "white light".

Sitting the correct way
- table and chair height are adjusted so that while sitting; elbow, knee and hip are at near 90 degree angle
- shoulders are relaxed
- don't look down with your whole head
- the chair should be positioned at the table so, that your nose and the sewing machine needle are on the same "line"

Ironing "station"
When setting up your ironing board and iron, consider setting them up few steps away from your sewing machine. Why?
When sewing, you will sit for  quit a while and the blood flow to your legs gets slower. It is really important to get up once in a while, stretch your legs and rest your butt.

EXTRA TIP - Try always to use your iron and board standing ;)

Happy sewing!
